Interaction Honors U.S.
Representatives McCollum And Shays With Its Congressional
Leadership Awards
Washington, D.C. – As the largest coalition of U.S.
based international development and humanitarian organizations,
InterAction works very closely with the U.S. government on
behalf of the millions of people our members serve in the
poorest communities in the world.
Every year InterAction honors two members of Congress who
have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the field of
international development and humanitarian issues. Our 2006
honorees continue the tradition of leadership and dedication
to advocating for the worlds disadvantaged.
Representative Christopher Shays has shown leadership in co-sponsoring
the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, as well as his support
for ensuring continued funding for the African Union peacekeepers
in Sudan. His unwavering support for the Iraq Community Action
Program, which encourages citizen involvement in local development,
also shows his commitment to humanitarian and international
development issues.
Representative Betty McCollum is a staunch advocate for sustainable
and gender sensitive international development. Her commitment
to international development is apparent in her sponsorship
of legislation to adequately support U.S. international programs
in maternal health, family planning, children’s health,
and the Millennium Development Goals.
We are pleased to present this award to these distinguished
public servants who understand the need for support of programs
that help real people in real ways.
The awardees will be honored at InterAction’s annual
CEO member retreat in December, in Washington D.C.
