Social Security Alert # 4

January 27, 2005

Dear Friend,

Earlier this week, I called on President Bush to begin the rapid and orderly withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, and since then, I have received supportive emails and phone calls, including many from families who have lost loved ones in Iraq.

TUNE IN TONIGHT: I will share their and my concerns about the war during tonight’s broadcast of ABC’s Nightline program.  I will have an opportunity to participate in the special town hall meeting to discuss the question: “Why Stay?”  (Check your local listings for air time)

The Administration has left us with no good options whatsoever in Iraq.  I strongly believe that the worst choice, however, would be to continue to do more of the same, and watch the body count grow.  It is clear that for stability to replace chaos, a political and not a military resolution is required.  It is time for our soldiers to start the journey home.

I have also announced that I would oppose President Bush’s request to Congress of $80 billion in additional military funding, mostly for the war in Iraq.  What we need from President Bush is not another request for more money for war, but instead, a clear, rapid and orderly exit strategy from Iraq.
