Korean War Vets Eligible for Pentagon Pin

Saxton local ‘partner' distributing commemorative pins; unveils Vets' page

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jim Saxton (NJ-03) today announced that he has joined with the U.S. Department of Defense in recognizing the contributions of Korean War veterans and accepted the role of official commemorative partner for the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Korean War, and has unveiled a web page to help interested vets or their survivors apply for a special Korean War commemorative pin.

"Although it's often called ‘The Forgotten War,' this is one way the nation can remember the sacrifices on the Korean Peninsula 50 years ago," Saxton said. "The news of the North Korean nuclear arms program this week brings to mind an indisputable fact: nearly 50 million people in South Korea are free today thanks to Korean War veterans."

Veterans from any military service who served in the Korean War theater on land, sea or air during the war, which is defined as June 25, 1950 through July 27, 1953, are eligible to receive a commemorative pin, which are suitable for lapels or veterans hats. Spouses or families of deceased veterans are also entitled to claim one pin per family.

The commemoration will continue through Nov. 11, 2003.  Residents of the Third Congressional District who are veterans of the Korean War can visit Saxton's new veterans' website at www.house.gov/saxton, or contact Saxton's offices at (609) 261-5800, (732) 914-2020 or (856) 428-0520. Veterans who are not Third District residents can use the website to get to the DOD's main website for the Korean War 50th anniversary where they can locate a commemorative partner in their area to apply for the pin.

As a partner in this effort, Saxton is required to seek out veterans in his district and award them the pins. The congressman plans to meet his commitment by reaching out to veterans who live in the Third Congressional District of New Jersey and who served in the Korean War via the new website page dedicated to the effort, and will promote it in upcoming newsletters.

"We've developed a new Veterans web page to help promote this commemoration," Saxton said. "We can use the vets' page for future veteran updates, legislative news or VA news," Saxton said. "The Korean War commemoration page will be maintained until Nov. 11, 2003, which is Veterans Day."

The web page also includes information on the South Korean government's commemorative efforts, including a medal from that government for American Korean War veterans. Saxton's involvement in the program was spurred by a constituent, Tony Severino of Haddonfield, a Korean War Army veteran.
