USO Awards Cong. Jim Saxton 2004 ‘Liberty Award’ for Service to Troops

PHILADELPHIA, PA.– U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton joined the ranks of Bob Hope, Rev. Dr. Billy Graham, Donald Rumsfeld, Roy Rogers, Connie Stevens, Martha Raye and other government officials and entertainers tonight as he was recognized for his efforts on behalf of members of the armed services.

Congressman Saxton has fought for the military community for many years. He has visited troops in the Middle East twice since 9-11 to show his support, and visited bases across the country. Saxton is one of the few members of Congress to have represented an active duty Army, Navy and Air Force Base in his district. He has fought to make sure U.S. troops have improved housing, adequate equipment and better pay.

Larry Mendte, CBS 3 KYW anchor, was master of ceremonies. Special guest included Miss USA Shandi Finnessey. USO also recognized one representative from each uniformed service.

The USO of Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey (“The Liberty USO”) gave its 2004 Liberty Award to Saxton. The prestigious award was presented to Rep. Saxton today, Saturday Sept. 18, at the Liberty USO’s Annual Gala at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. Bob Hope was the first recipient in 1961.

The USO of Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey’s Liberty Award has been presented for over four decades to distinguished Americans from our business, political, entertainment, religious, military and philanthropic communities. The recipients have made noteworthy contributions to the security of this Nation and the morale and welfare of the troops who serve our country.

“This is one of the greatest honors of my career,” Saxton said. “The list of other recipents over the last 40 years is impressive. I feel humble to be listed in such company. I help veterans and service members as much as I can because they do so much for our country.”
