Pryce Secures Funding for Union County Veterans Memorial

Fundraising Goal Met with Federal Dollars

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) announced her successful inclusion of $175,000 for the Union County Veterans Remembrance Committee in the House version of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2007 Transportation, Treasury, and HUD Appropriations bill (TTHUD).  The bill, H.R. 5576, was approved by the House on June 16th.

The funding amount secured by Pryce would allow the Remembrance Committee to surpass its fundraising goal of $500,000 to construct a veteran’s memorial at the Union County Court House.  The monument will honor the more than 1,200 U.S. Veterans from Union County killed in action, missing in action and taken prisoner of war since the Revolutionary War.  All names will be listed on the monument, along with a searchable database of more than 15,000 Union County Veterans available to the public for research at the Veterans Plaza.

“Upon its completion, the monument will serve as a befitting honor to the heroic Union County servicemen and women who defended our nation from tyranny and oppression to preserve the liberties we now cherish,” said Pryce.  “This will be such an important resource for current and future residents to better understand and appreciate the triumphs and sacrifices of the generations that preceded them.

“While I was proud to play a role in this noble undertaking, all accolades should be directed to the Union County Remembrance Committee for its tireless fundraising efforts -- all done through the hard work of passionate and dedicated volunteers.”

A concurrent fundraising effort was initiated by the North Union District Veterans Board for a memorial honoring Richwood veterans to be placed in Richwood Park.  Last week, while attending the Richwood Springfest celebration, Pryce offered to assist them in their endeavors.

H.R. 5576 now awaits consideration in the Senate.
