Pryce Statement on Dubai Port World Vote Washington, DC -- Yesterday, Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-Upper Arlington) voted to prevent Dubai Ports World (DP World) from gaining control of six U.S. shipping ports. Pryce, a critic of the proposed transaction and Chair of the first subcommittee to hold hearings on the deal, issued the following statement after the vote: “While last week’s announcement that DP World was pulling out of the deal was encouraging, this vote sent an important message to the American people that we share their founded concerns with the security implications of the transaction. “Since 9/11, Congress has made securing our ports a priority, and we have invested millions and pledged billions more to give Americans peace of mind that what is shipped into our country will cause us no harm. With this vote, Congress took another step to ensure the security of our citizens and give them confidence in their government's commitment to their well-being. “The United Arab Emirates is and will continue to be a friend of the United States and a trusted ally in the War on Terror. Nonetheless, the process by which this transaction was approved alarmed me and most Americans, and my subcommittee will continue to work to improve it.” The effort to strip language blocking the ports deal was defeated by a vote of 377-38. |
