Owens Announces $10 Million Plus in Major Transportation

Projects in the 11th Congressional District

Congressman Major Owens announced today (August 15) that through his efforts several transportation projects in the 11th Congressional District have been awarded funds from the Department of Transportation for reconstruction and road safety programs under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21).

Seven projects in the 11th District have received a total of $10, 922,400 for reconstruction and roadway development.

"As a strong advocate for community development and job creation, I am pleased to have brought needed federal resources to projects that spans my district while at the same time bringing employment opportunities to my constituents," Congressman Owens said.

Eastern Parkway, the oldest six-lane parkway built in the world received $1,920,000 for renovating its median and sidewalks from the Brooklyn Museum of Art to the Brooklyn Public Library.  Empire Boulevard, a major thoroughfare that cuts across both the Lubavitch and Caribbean communities, will receive $5,120,000 for reconstruction of the roadway.  Two hospitals, Kings County and SUNY Downstate Medical Center each received $836,000, and the Brooklyn Children's Museum received $1,170,400 for construction of intermodal facilities.  The Court & Smith street shopping district received $640,000 for upgrading the sidewalks and streets. Lastly, the Gowanus Project Stakeholder Group received $400,000 to study a Gowanus Tunnel as a desirable alternative to the current Gowanus Expressway.

"Nothing pleases me more than to create opportunities that will leave a lasting legacy in the 11th Congressional District," Owens said.
