OWENS QUESTIONS JOURNALIST'S INTEGRITY
As members of the fourth estate, journalists are expected to be honest and
honorable, and to adhere to the highest standards of professional ethics. And
the code of ethics that govern journalism and journalist in the United States
underscore these standards of conduct.
Armstrong Williams, a prominent Black journalist has not only broken the code
but admits that he saw no wrong in being paid to plug the President Bush's No
Child Left Behind legislation and manipulate an unsuspecting public. "It is
clear that Armstrong violated the journalism code of ethics. He used his
position to gain personal advantage. He should face disciplinary action,"
said Congressman Major Owens.
Williams was paid almost a quarter a million dollars to use his influence with
other Black journalist to promote the education legislation and to serve as a
conduit of propaganda for school privatization and vouchers. "It's time that
Armstrong Williams fess up to his impropriety and gross breach of professional
behavior," said Owens.
