January 3, 2005 The Borough of Brooklyn, the State of New York, and the United States of America has suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of the legendary Shirley Chisholm. “Shirley Chisholm was a unique urban folk heroine. She opened up traditional politics to grassroots and civil rights leaders who had lost all hope in the ballot box as a means to achieve progress at a critical time in American history. Above all she was a breath of fresh air who helped us to reexamine electoral politics as a route to empowerment,” said Owens. As a Caribbean American and the first Black woman to be elected to the House of Representatives, “Chisholm was a unifying force between the Caribbean and African American community in Brooklyn and throughout the nation,” said Owens. |
