CONGRESSMAN OWENS DEEPLY SADDENED AT THE
LOSS OF THE LEGENDARY SHIRLEY CHISHOLM

January 3, 2005

The Borough of Brooklyn, the State of New York, and the United States of America has suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of the legendary Shirley Chisholm.

“Shirley Chisholm was a unique urban folk heroine.  She opened up traditional politics to grassroots and civil rights leaders who had lost all hope in the ballot box as a means to achieve progress at a critical time in American history.  Above all she was a breath of fresh air who helped us to reexamine electoral politics as a route to empowerment,” said Owens.

As a Caribbean American and the first Black woman to be elected to the House of Representatives, “Chisholm was a unifying force between the Caribbean and African American community in Brooklyn and throughout the nation,” said Owens.
