Owens Joins Congressional
Effort to Relieve Gas Pump Prices
Brooklyn, NY - As the
summer peak driving period begins and as gas prices remain at high levels,
Congressman Major Owens has joined a Congressional effort to reduce the price of
gasoline. Congressman Owens is an original co-sponsor of the Gas Price Spike Act
of 2005, a bill introduced May 4th in the House of Representatives by
Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH).
The bill will address the spike in price of gasoline by placing a windfall
profits tax on oil companies; giving tax credits for the purchase of ultra
efficient vehicles; and provide federal grants to reduce mass transit fares.
“Even if gas prices fall, consumers will continue to be gouged at the
pump,” Congressman Owens said. “The only thing that we can be sure
rises faster that the price of gasoline is the skyrocketing profits of oil
companies.”
“Washington has been ignoring this issue for too long.” Owens
said. “High gas prices are eating away at consumer’s disposal income and
could lead to a further economic downturn, especially for those whose livelihood
depend on gasoline and diesel fuel.”
