Nadler Funds Security Cameras to Fight Crime in Coney Island

BROOKLYN, NY – Congressman Jerrold Nadler will meet today with residents of Haber Houses to highlight federal and local efforts to improve safety and fight crime by installing over forty security cameras in the Coney Island neighborhood.  He will be joined by City Councilman Dominic Recchia who played a key role in securing funding and ensuring installation of the security cameras.

Congressman Nadler successfully fought for $225,000 for the cameras from the federal government.  Congressman Nadler’s prepared remarks follow:

“Two years ago, residents of the Haber Houses came to us for help in confronting crime in their neighborhood.  They specifically requested that their elected officials help provide them with security cameras that would help monitor and ward off potential predators.  That’s when City Councilman Dominic Recchia, Borough President Marty Markowitz and I got together to come up with a plan to realize this worthy project.

“Along with the funds that my colleagues have provided, I am proud to say that I was successful in obtaining a Congressional earmark of $225,000.  And, now, I am here today to officially acknowledge the installation of those security cameras – 41 of them to be precise.  And I must say:  It’s always nice to be a part of a government that can actually deliver the goods, be they large or small.

“I hope these cameras add both to residents’ safety and to their sense of security in and around their own homes.  In concert with the efforts of our local police officers and of concerned neighbors, these cameras are weapons within our collective arsenal to ensure a minimum of danger within the Haber Houses.  I know that there have been a number of ugly incidents here in the recent past and that residents have rightly feared for their safety.  I know that, working together, we can make sure that this unpleasant reality improves immediately and on a continuous basis.  We will not sit idly by as elderly immigrants and others fall prey to criminal opportunists.

“I want to thank everyone who helped make these cameras possible, and who, in general, works toward the improvement of Coney Island: Councilman Dominic Recchia, Borough President Marty Markowitz, Rabbi Wiener and the staff of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, the New York City Housing Authority, Police Service Area #1, the 60th Precinct and, of course, the residents of the Haber Houses for demanding accountability for their own safety.”
