Nadler Passes Amendment to Keep Guns Away from Sex Offenders

“A criminal convicted of indecent exposure, lewd conduct, or molestation against a minor should not have access to a gun, plain and simple,” Congressman Nadler said.  “Sex offenders who target young people pose a great danger to society from the start, and it’s just common sense that we should keep firearms out of their hands.”

Current law bars all felons from owning firearms.  In addition, some misdemeanor crimes, such as domestic violence convictions, are seen as serious enough that perpetrators of those crimes are barred from owning guns, as well.  Shockingly, however, the restriction on gun purchase and ownership does not currently apply to those who commit sex crimes against minors.  Congressman Nadler’s amendment closes that loophole. 

The amendment passed on a voice vote this afternoon with the support of the full House.  The underlying bill, H.R. 3132, passed on a vote of 371-52.  The legislation now awaits consideration by the Senate.
