Nadler Announces $150,000 for LGBT Community Center in NYC

New York, NY—Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) is pleased to announce that the New York City Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center’s Mental Health Promotion Online Demonstration Project has received $150,000 in the Congressional appropriations process. The funding, which was made possible by Nadler’s efforts, will go toward the development and promotion of an interactive, online substance abuse and suicide prevention model program.

“It is a pleasure to announce that the House and Senate have recognized the very significant role of the NYC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center to the people of New York,” said Nadler. “The Mental Health Promotion Online Demonstration Project will provide an invaluable service to the GLBT community and is very deserving of this federal funding.”

The new Online Demonstration Project will combine confidential support services with online information to route at-risk lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth, adults, and families to the help they need. The initiative will make the thousands of referrals the Center has onsite available to literally hundreds of thousands of individuals, including at-risk youth and adults in the tri-state area. The site will be targeted for use by individuals, including young people, at risk for substance abuse, which is estimated at 10–30% of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population.

The NYC LGBT Center serves 6,000 people a week through its walk-in and telephone information and referral services, and cultural, educational, and public policy programs. Center services are targeted at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, and their mental health and social services reach diverse ethnic, gender and socio-economic groups.
