LOWEY TO BE HONORED BY WESTCHESTER DISABLED ON THE MOVE

October 15, 2004

WHITE PLAINS, NY – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) will be honored by Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc., in a ceremony tonight in White Plains.  Lowey will be presented with the Spirit of Independence Award for her work on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

“It is tremendously important that every member of our society is given the opportunity to reach their full potential.  We cannot let barriers stand in the way of any group - either in our communities or in our laws,” said Lowey.  “I’m very honored to receive this award and I will continue to push for legislation that ensures equal opportunity to people with disabilities.”

The Spirit of Independence Award is presented to individuals or organizations that have contributed significantly to efforts that promote and enhance independence for people with disabilities.

Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc. is a non-residential Independent Living Center for people with disabilities that works to empower people with disabilities to control their own lives; advocate for civil rights and a barrier-free society; encourage people with disabilities to participate in the political process; educate government, business, other entities and society as a whole to understand, accept, and accommodate people with disabilities; and create an environment that inspires self-respect.
