LOWEY STATEMENT ON TERROR ALERT

August 2, 2004

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) issued the following statement on recent decision to upgrade the terror threat level in New York City, Newark, NY, and Washington, DC:

“The new terror alert reminds us of how far we’ve come on improving homeland security – but also on how much farther there is to go.

“Congress has yet to address the screening of all airport employees, the interoperability of first responder communications, or port security, to name just a few issues, in a manner that will provide real security to the citizens of this nation.

“I welcome the recommendations of the September 11th Commissioners and am pleased that the Administration has embraced several important components; however a piecemeal approach will not be enough to solve the enormous and far-reaching problems facing our security.  Congress now needs to act to review and implement these recommendations and I am pleased that Congress will meet in August for hearings on the report.

“Once again, we’ve raised the terror alert - now it is time to also raise the action alert and move on these crucial measures to protect our nation.”
