LOWEY:  DOCUMENTS RAISE QUESTIONS ON MIERS' RECORD

October 18, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – Documents unearthed today reveal that Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers supported a constitutional amendment banning abortions.  Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland), the former chair of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, issued the following statement on the revelations:

“Supreme Court justices are asked to deliberate on the most fundamental constitutional issues.  Harriet Miers expressed her ‘active’ support for a constitutional amendment banning abortion.  Given this new information, can we really expect that, if confirmed, she’ll use her post to uphold the law on this issue instead of changing it to fit her own political views?

“Harriet Miers must explain to the Senate and the American people – who support the right to choose – exactly how her anti-choice views would affect her service on the Supreme Court.”
