LOWEY STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF HARRIET MIERS

October 3, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) issued the following statement on the nomination of White House General Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court:

“Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has been a critical moderating voice on the Supreme Court.  I had hoped that President Bush would choose a similarly mainstream person to replace her.  With no judicial experience and no written record to examine, it will be hard to determine whether Harriet Miers fits that mold.

“While the Senate had problems discerning the judicial philosophy of Judge Roberts, it will be even more difficult to learn anything about the views or opinions of Miers who has never served on the bench.  I hope she will be forthcoming with the Senate and the American people so that we will know what kind of justice she would be if confirmed.”
