LOWEY STATEMENT ON PASSING OF CHIEF JUSTICE WILLIAM REHNQUIST, NOMINATION OF JOHN ROBERTS
September 6, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) issued the following statement on the death of Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist and the nomination of Judge John Roberts to succeed him:

“Chief Justice Rehnquist was a towering figure on the Supreme Court over the past three decades.  Although I often disagreed with his views, I respected his efforts to fight for an independent judiciary to ensure that our judicial system is not undermined by political pressures.  I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

“President Bush has now chosen to elevate Judge John Roberts to be the nominee for Chief Justice.  With only sixteen previous Chief Justices in the history of our nation, it is of paramount importance that the Senate conduct a full and fair review of Judge Roberts’ record including information that has been withheld by the White House.

“Even before his nomination to Chief Justice, I had serious questions about Roberts' record on women's rights, the right to privacy, and efforts to end discrimination.  His opposition to legislation and court decisions that have protected individual freedoms, voting rights, and the economic well-being of generations of Americans also requires thorough examination during the confirmation hearings in the Senate.

“The President now also has the opportunity to select a new replacement for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.  It is my hope that he will nominate someone who, like O’Connor, will by guided by the principles of moderation, balance, and thoughtfulness.”
