LOWEY MARKS 32nd ANNIVERSARY OF ROE v. WADE

January 21, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY) joined other Members of the bipartisan House Pro-Choice Caucus to mark tomorrow’s 32nd  Anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade. Lowey made the following statement:

“For more than three decades, the right of women to make reproductive decisions without undue government interference has been enshrined in law.  The landmark Roe v. Wade decision allows women to choose when and whether to have children, paving the way for greater economic and social equality.

“However, pro-choice Americans cannot and should not stop fighting to make sure that these freedoms are available for future generations of women.  Safe, legal access to abortion is under attack from forces that will not stop until Roe v. Wade is reversed.  We must be as aggressive in reminding the President that a majority of Americans support Roe v. Wade as our opponents have been in trying to curtail a woman’s right to choose.  There is no mandate for abandoning Roe v. Wade and we cannot allow the President and Republican Congressional leadership to govern as if there is one.”
