LOWEY:  GAS ACT DOES NOTHING TO LOWER FUEL COSTS

October 7, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the United States House of Representatives approved the Gasoline for America’s Security Act (GAS Act).  Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) opposed the bill, citing its failure to do anything to lower the costs of gasoline, heating oil or natural gas.

Lowey issued the following statement on the legislation:

“The energy bill we voted on today was worse than if we had done nothing.  The bill fails to take any action to lower gasoline, heating oil, and natural gas prices.  It does nothing to diversify our energy supply, it does nothing to encourage energy conservation, and it does nothing to promote our energy independence.  The provisions that are in the bill weaken environmental regulations that protect our health, take away local input on energy projects, and hand over even more money to the big oil companies that are already raking in billions of dollars in profit every month.

“American families are already suffering from high gas prices, and will soon feel the effects of high natural gas and heating oil prices.  We need a real energy plan, not a grab bag of goodies for the oil and gas industry at a time they are reaping record profits.  I am working with my colleagues to craft a real energy bill that will help working families and lower energy costs.”
