LOWEY:  'ONE STEP CLOSER' ON DAVIDS ISLAND

March 8, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced the completion of the draft environmental assessment on the removal of buildings on Davids Island.  A public meeting will be held on March 22 at 7pm in the Council Chambers of the New Rochelle City Hall to present the findings and solicit community input.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) has worked to secure $4.1 million in federal funds for the project.  Lowey issued the following statement on the announcement:

“For years, I’ve worked with officials from New Rochelle, Westchester County, and the Corps of Engineers to secure the funding needed to move forward on the clean-up of Davids Island.  This area has a great deal of potential and I am thrilled that we are now one step closer to cleaning up and restoring the Island.  I applaud the work of the Corps of Engineers and look forward to the day we can officially open Davids Island as a recreational center in our community.”
