As the United States begins the 21st Century, we have come to a crossroads on the related issues of energy and environmental protection. On one hand, energy is the foundation of our nation’s economy. Energy lights and heats our homes, runs our cars, and powers our offices and industries. At the same time, we must take care not to sacrifice environmental quality for short-term gains. Particularly for those of us who are fortunate enough to live in the Great Lakes Basin, we must redouble the effort to protect our water, air, and public lands.
