Anti-Drug Efforts
< Back to Issues
Rep. Levin is active at home and in D.C. on anti-drug efforts focused on engaging entire communities in combating substance abuse. While studies have shown a decline of youth drug use in recent years, the statistics are still alarming. In 2005, 23% of 12th graders surveyed had used drugs in the last month, 47% had used alcohol, and 23% had smoked cigarettes. We have learned that our approach to substance abuse must be consistent, strong, and it must include prevention, treatment and law enforcement efforts. It must also involve all segments of our community in sending a unified message to our youth, and providing them with the tools necessary to avoid drugs.

Rep. Levin is the co-author of a federal program, The Drug Free Communities Support Program, designed to support community anti-drug coalitions.

Rep. Levin is leading efforts in Congress to preserve the Safe and Drug Free Schools Program.

Other useful websites are the Office of National Drug Control Policy where Maryanne Solberg, the former Executive Director of the Troy Community Anti-Drug Coalition is the Deputy Director and the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America which because of the Drug Free Communities Support Program now runs an Institute to support community-based anti-drug efforts.
