The 12th District Congressional Advisory Committee was established by Rep. Levin to facilitate discussions, meetings and other activities on the challenges of higher education and the establishment of a four year public institution in Macomb. Former Fitzgerald School Superintendent Jim Edoff and Former State Senator Ken DeBeaussaert are the co-chairs of this Congressional Panel.
Participation is open to all those who are interested in working on this issue. Please call Mr. Levin’s District Congressional office at 586-498-7122 to add your name to the list of interested participants and/or to begin to receive information on the work of the Advisory Committee. At the first meeting of the full Advisory Committee on Saturday, March 11, 2006 participants discussed the advantages of a four-year institution within the County and broke into the following four working subgroups:
► Current Post Secondary Services to Macomb County Residents
► Current and Future Economic Needs and Opportunities
► Inherent Barriers to Enrollment and Completion
► Enhancing the Higher Education Environment within the County and Responding to Expectations of Students, Parents, and the Community
The purpose of the working subgroups is as follows:
► Gather Information and Analysis for full Committee Review
► Inform the work of Committee Members, the office of Rep. Levin and other outside experts
► Engage Stakeholders
► Increase Citizen Involvement and Heightening Community Awareness
The voluntary members of each working subgroup shall review, discuss and summarize findings related to the area of focus. While the process each subgroup uses to complete its charge will not be prescribed, the approach should include examination of relevant research, information gathering from experts, work with support staff, public outreach for citizen input and testimony from interested and impacted individuals.
Next Steps:
The work of the subgroups is currently underway. Two of the subgroups are going to report back to the full Advisory Committee in May, and two are reporting back in June. If you would like to join one of the subgroups, please contact Mr. Levin’s office at 586-498-7122.
