Rep. Sander Levin launched the 12th District Congressional Advisory Committee on Higher Education in Macomb County last November, 2005 at a student roundtable at Fitzgerald High School in Warren.

In January, 2006 Rep. Levin hosted town hall meetings in Warren and St. Clair Shores and joined another town hall hosted by State Rep. Fred Miller in Clinton Township. The town halls were attended by a broad cross section of citizens and helped to facilitate a back-and-forth discussion on the current opportunities and barriers to higher education for Macomb residents, the economic impacts of a 4-year institution, and importantly, the positive role such an institution could serve to increase the numbers of students achieving a four year degree and equip Macomb for the economic challenges ahead.

The first meeting of the Advisory Committee was held on Saturday, March 11th at Roseville High School. The group of 100 residents offered the following advantages of having a four-year public institution within Macomb County during a group brainstorming session: “Close to Home, Diversify the workforce, Affordable, Seamless Transfer from Community College, Job Creation, Degrees of the Future, Research, Increase Individual Income, Convenient Return to School, Another Competitive Option, Change in Attitude, Increase Interaction with High Schools and Students, Opportunity to Broaden Experience, Venue to attract Government and Private money, Opportunity to ‘invent’ the Institution that meets the needs of the County.”
