KOLBE VOTES TO ENSURE AFFORDABLE ENERGY

Package Promotes Economic, National Security

(Washington, DC)  --  Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) today voted in favor of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (H.R. 6).  The measure, which ensures a more affordable and environmentally friendly energy supply, passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 249-183.

“This bill is a commonsense approach to improving our nation’s energy needs, while at the same time spurring our economy and creating thousands of new jobs,” said Rep. Kolbe.

“Although I support robust tax relief to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, I will work to place a stronger emphasis on tax breaks for renewable energies before this bill becomes law.  But, it is important for Americans and Arizonans to move the energy debate forward.” added Rep. Kolbe.

Highlights of the bill include:

  • Strengthens our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources
  • Promotes a cleaner environment by using renewable energy and alternative power
  • Improves our electricity transmission capacity and reliability through enforceable standard requirements, incentives transmission grid improvements
  • Modernizes electricity infrastructure and protects consumers from unfair prices
  • Sets stricter standards for energy use in federal buildings
  • Improves regulation of nuclear and hydroelectric power
  • Promotes clean coal technologies
