Oklahoma: A Brief History
  • Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as the 46th state on November 16, 1907.
  • The word Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw language and means "Land of the Red Man."
  • Oklahoma is divided into 77 counties and has a total area of 69,957 square miles.
  • The population of Oklahoma in 1992 was 3,207,111.
  • Oklahoma boasts 7.5 million acres of forest, 1,301 square miles of water and more coastline than the Atlantic and Gulf together.
  • Oklahoma's state colors are green and white and the state tree is the Redbud.
  • As a tribute to its rich Native American heritage, Oklahoma celebrates the buffalo as its state animal.
  • Labor Omnia Vincit (Labor Conquers All Things) graces the great seal of the state of Oklahoma as a reminder of the individuals who established and built our great state.
