LUIS FORTUÑO AND TRANSPORTATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN DON YOUNG (R-ALASKA) VISIT COAST GUARD

San Juan, Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico Congressman Luis G. Fortuño and Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Don Young (R- Alaska) visited today the U.S. Coast Guard facilities located in La Puntilla.

Congressman Fortuño, who serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, took advantage of the congressman’s visit to the island to discuss Coast Guard efforts in Puerto Rico and its joint efforts with state agencies to provide security. “The Coast Guard in Puerto Rico provides critical services to prevent drug trafficking, offers emergency help at sea and stops illegal immigrants to our island, as well as a significant part of the Caribbean. It’s important that people in Washington understand the level of responsibility that entails and, therefore, for Puerto Rico to have the support that policymakers can given them.” The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chaired by the Alaska lawmaker is in charge of appropriating funds for ports.

During their visit, Fortuño and Young went on a tour of one of the vessels that patrols the island’s waters to learn in detail about the procedures Coast Guard officials use in their daily operations.
