Congressional Hispanic Conference Members Applaud Gonzales Confirmation

(Washington D.C.)- The Congressional Hispanic Conference released the following statements today from several of its members regarding the Senate’s confirmation of Judge Alberto Gonzales’ for Attorney General:

“I am very happy that Alberto Gonzales has been confirmed by the Senate as our fist Hispanic Attorney General.  I am proud of Alberto's achievements and I look forward to working with him on behalf of all Americans.  It's a proud day for America because it proves that one can come from economically poor environments and succeed by working and studying hard, as Alberto did.”

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chair (FL-18)

“The attempts to delay and derail the confirmation of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General of the United States have been wrong and objectionable.

"This is the fifth time that President Bush has asked Alberto Gonzales to serve his country, and he has always done so with honor, integrity, and distinction.

“This man of humble beginnings, who has achieved so much, personifies the American dream.  Hispanics throughout America are proud of him, as all Americans will be of our next Attorney General.”

Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL-21)

“With such a ridiculous number of Democrats voting against another highly qualified Hispanic, it is no surprise why Hispanic support for Democrats keeps eroding.  Today’s confirmation of Alberto Gonzales is a triumph for America and a great boost to the Hispanic community.”

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25)

“Today I am proud to congratulate our next Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.  Judge Gonzales’ professional and personal achievements are testament to the immense contributions Hispanic Americans make on a daily basis to our Nation.  Judge Gonzales will be an excellent Attorney General and he is a great example of inspiration for future generations.”
