Congressional Hispanic Conference Members Urge Gonzales Confirmation

(Washington D.C.)- The Congressional Hispanic Conference released the following statements today from several of its members regarding the Senate’s debate and pending vote this week on Judge Alberto Gonzales’ nomination for Attorney General:

"Alberto Gonzales is a highly qualified nominee who happens to be a true American success story and a source of pride for Hispanics across the country.  I implore Democratic Senators to put partisanship aside and vote to confirm him."

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chair (FL-18)

“President Bush’s selection of White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to serve as Attorney General illustrates an unwavering commitment to bring a diversity of experienced voices into the discussion of how to best protect our nation.  Alberto Gonzales personifies the American dream—and as the first Hispanic Attorney General he will be uniquely qualified to fulfill the duties of the position.  I urge the Senate to expeditiously confirm his well-earned appointment.”

Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL-21)

“Judge Gonzales has excelled at every position he has held and is clearly capable of handling the duties of Attorney General.  Judge Gonzales takes the War on Terror seriously, and confirming him will be a triumph for America and a great boost to the Hispanic community”

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25)

“As the Senate approaches a vote on Judge Alberto Gonzales' nomination for Attorney General, I reaffirm my unwavering support for the confirmation of this extremely qualified nominee.  Judge Gonzales' proven leadership and outstanding legal qualifications make him the perfect candidate to lead our Department of Justice.”
