Etheridge Unveils Real Security Agenda

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington), the only N.C. member of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security, today joined House Democrats in announcing a new national security agenda, "Real Security: The Democratic Plan to Protect America and Restore Our Leadership in the World." The agenda aims to keep North Carolinians and America safe by strengthening homeland security efforts, increasing energy independence, fully funding veterans' benefits and capturing Osama bin Laden.

"Almost five years after the September 11th terrorist attacks, we are still not as safe as we should be," said Etheridge. "The Real Security agenda represents my commitment to protecting North Carolinians and America. It will also ensure that the over 767,000 veterans living in North Carolina receive the health care and benefits they have earned. We live in a new time with constantly evolving threats, and we must ensure that America stands ready to respond to an emergency and to protect our homeland. "

The Real Security agenda will:

  • Double special forces and increase human intelligence capabilities to capture Osama bin Laden.
  • Fully man, train and equip first responders.
  • Free America from dependence on Middle East oil by increasing development of domestic resources to produce alternate fuels and enhancing energy efficiency.
  • Enact a GI Bill of Rights and fully fund veterans' health care and benefits.
  • Immediately implement all of the 9/11 Commission's recommendations.
  • Improve border security.
  • Invest in mass transit security.
  • Screen 100% of containers entering the United States and prevent outsourcing of American security at our ports.
