Etheridge Introduces Bill to Designate September National Rural Month

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington), the Co-Chair of the Rural Working Group, has introduced legislation to designate September as "National Rural Month." Etheridge introduced the bill with fellow Rural Working Group Co-Chair U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-South Dakota).

"Rural America forms the backbone of the U.S. economy, and rural Americans reflect the values that make America great," said Etheridge. "Congress should recognize the crucial role that rural communities have played in both creating our great nation and in keeping it strong today. It is only fitting that Congress designate a National Rural Month, so that America may honor our rural communities."

The resolution calls on Americans to hold appropriate ceremonies and activities during September. The purpose of the resolution is to raise the profile of rural America and to promote awareness of the important role that rural communities play in the nation. Rural areas make up 80 percent of the United States and are home to 50 million people. The Senate has passed a similar resolution, S. Res. 561.

Etheridge is also a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee, where he has worked to promote rural economic development. In May, Etheridge introduced the BIOFUEL Act of 2006, which would increase domestic biofuels production, creating jobs and boosting economies in rural America.
