HOMELAND SECURITY
Protecting our hometowns and our nation

At an high risk of attack, the Red Cross recommends that individuals:

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 rocked this country to its core and awakened each and every one of us to the reality that America is not immune to the vicious terrorist attacks fueled by hatred.

Since 9/11, our country has made great strides toward securing our country through increased security at our airports and critical infrastructures, through federal and state legislation, and through realistic assessments of our weaknesses.

However, there is still much work to be done. Homeland security is impossible without hometown security. Our local first responders are on the frontlines of homeland security each and every day, and I am committed to making sure they have the resources, the information and the tools they need to get the job done.

On November 25, 2002, the Department of Homeland Security was created and charged with the primary mission of preventing, protecting against, and responding to acts of terrorism on our soil. The creation of DHS marked the largest reorganization of the federal government in a generation, combining all or parts of 22 federal agencies.

Earlier this year I was appointed to the House Select Committee on Homeland Security, which coordinates all House oversight of the new Homeland Security Department. I am honored to serve on the Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness and Response and the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Science, and Research and Development.
