Etheridge Announces Bulletproof Vest
Grants For Area Cops
Grants
Will Help Protect Area Cops in the Line of Fire
WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today announced today
that law enforcement agencies in the Second Congressional District have
received more than $89,000 in federal grants to purchase bulletproof vests.
The grants are being made as part of the Bulletproof Vest Partnership
Grant Act of 2000 which assists law enforcement agencies in the purchase
of bulletproof vests for its officers. The awards are part of $957,365.27
in such grants being made throughout the state to purchase 3,190 vests.
Etheridge actively led the effort in Congress to pass the initiative into
law.
"This is good news for the police officers and citizens of North
Carolina," Etheridge said. "These grants will help protect our
law enforcement officers from the bullets which have taken the lives of
too many of North Carolina's officers. Bulletproof vests have made the
difference between life and death for law enforcement personnel throughout
the country, and every officer should have access to this lifesaving device."
The Department of Justice awarded the grants under the Bulletproof Vest
Partnership Act of 2000. The purpose of the Act is to save the lives of
law enforcement officers by helping states and local governments equip
their law enforcement officers with armor vests. The law requires that
at least half of the funds disbursed through this statute must go to units
of government serving fewer than 100,000 residents. Each applicant for
a grant under the act may request funds to help purchase one armor vest
per law enforcement officer per year. Grants are made for up to 50 percent
of the total cost of the vest, including all taxes and shipping and handling.
