Congressman Bob Etheridge
Guest Column - A Prayer for Our Soldiers
November 8, 2004

This Veterans Day our thoughts turn to our nation's soldiers - past and present - who have fought for our nation, for our values and for our freedom. Today's brave men and women in uniform continue in a proud tradition that stretches back to the Minutemen. Our veterans and our soldiers have been at the ready - to save the world from tyranny, to end suffering and to usher in hope and freedom.

Our veterans built this nation with their sacrifice and their dedication. A grateful nation thanks all those whose service secured for us the many blessings we hold dear. This year we pay special tribute to our World War II veterans, as we mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day. As I walked the shores at Normandy this summer and toured the beachside cemetery, I was overcome with emotion and with the scope of sacrifice. The success of these men and women, the Greatest Generation, ushered in a new world and built the foundation of modern America. Their contributions, and those of all our veterans, must never be forgotten.

Today, our men and women in uniform serve with honor, integrity and professionalism in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan, in Iraq and in many other countries throughout the world. Many are from North Carolina. Many are stationed at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. And many are our friends and neighbors mobilized from local Guard and Reserve units. They face daily danger and uncertainty; their families back home face sleepless nights and worry for a loved one far away.

This Veterans Day, I join you in honoring the service of our nation's finest. I ask you to say a prayer for our veterans, for our troops overseas and for our military families. I ask you to say a prayer of thanks for their service, a prayer for the safe return of all our troops and a prayer for peace and freedom throughout the world.
