Emanuel Statement on May Unemployment

“With ever-increasing tuition and health care costs, families’ budgets and incomes are being stretched to the breaking point”

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) issued the following statement in response to the updated unemployment figures released this morning by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“While corporate profits have increased by 87% since 2001, and executive compensation has gone up 8.7%, the rest of Americans have seen the most anemic wage salary and wage growth since World War II—a record low of 2.8%.

With ever-increasing tuition and health care costs, families’ budgets and incomes are being stretched to the breaking point.

Today’s numbers confirm that we need an economic strategy that puts the family budgets on equal footing with the corporate bottom line.”
