Emanuel on Wages: “Best of Times, Worst of Times”

CHICAGO, IL—Today, U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Labor’s report that the economy created only 75,000 jobs in May, and wages only increased by 0.1%, failing to keep pace with inflation.

“Hourly wages rose just a penny, as consumer prices across the board continued to rise.  To borrow from Dickens, it is ‘the best of times;’ it is ‘the worst of times.’ While unemployment is at 4.6%, wages have been stagnant.  This economy is known as the wageless recovery.  The America people have gone five years without a real increase in wages.  In fact, the only increase the great American middle class has seen is in their cost of living.  Five years into this wageless recovery, America’s middle class families deserve better.”
