Emanuel: “Republicans Raise Taxes on Middle-Class”

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) released the following in response to the following statement:

“That’s one way of saying they’re going to raise your taxes because, you see, if you don’t extend the tax cuts, your taxes go up.”

                                    -President Bush, September 21, 2006

“The Republican Congress left town last week, but not before raising the taxes of millions of middle-class families and businesses by failing to renew the expiring college tuition deduction, the deduction for teachers who buy school supplies, and the research and development tax credit.

“Middle-class families are already struggling after five straight years of flat wages and rising health care, education and transportation costs.  The last thing they need now is the added burden of higher tax bills.

“Americans deserve better than a Congress that showers the special interests with billions of dollars in tax breaks and leaves them holding the bag. It is time for a new direction and new priorities in Washington, D.C.”
