Emanuel Awards “Hypocrisy Moment of the Week” to Bush Administration for Erratic Deployment of Troops

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) awarded his Hypocrisy Moment of the Week to the Bush Administration for its erratic deployment of troops to meet America’s threats.

In presenting the award Congressman Emanuel noted, “In Afghanistan, where the Administration claims al Qaeda is planning attacks against the United States and its citizens, the Administration is recommending a reduction in troop strength from a peak of 20,300 to 13,000 by the end of this summer.

“In North Korea, where they are building nuclear weapons and missiles to deliver those weapons, we are reducing our presence by 12,500 troops -- a full brigade and one third of our troop strength.

“And in Iraq, where there are no WMD, and no obvious threats to the United States and its citizens, we have 138,000 troops and are actively increasing our commitment.”

Emanuel continued, “It used to be that troop deployments followed threats to our security.  I guess the above deployment is part of Donald Rumsfeld’s reinvention of the armed forces.”
