Veterans' Issues

Congresswoman Johnson began her career as a nurse in the Veteran's Administration Hospital. She has been a leader in Congress on issues dealing with veterans. Congresswoman Johnson believes that the utmost attention should be given to issues affecting veterans and their standard of living after service. She believes that America has a duty to safeguard the rights of those who have provided the ultimate service to the country.

In the 106th Congress, Congresswoman Johnson is a co-sponsor of H.R. 3573, the Keep Our Promise to America's Military Retirees Act. The bill provides for health care coverage for veterans. Congress has found that many of the nation's older veterans were not provided access to adequate health care, and that space available military medical facilities are limited.

Congresswoman Johnson also supports efforts to ensure that the Department of Veterans Affairs has the ability to recoup the costs caused by veterans who smoked. She also supports raising the cost of living allowance for disabled veterans. She is also committed to ensuring that veteran entrepreneurs have access to government contracts.
