Federal and State Representatives Question US Rail Corporation on Proposed Development in Erie Township

Washington, DC - Today, Representative John D. Dingell (D-MI15), US Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), US Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), and Michigan State Representative Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) sent letters to the US Rail Corporation, the Monroe County Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as well as to state and federal regulatory agencies regarding a proposed intermodal rail facility in Erie Township, Michigan.

The lawmakers hope this action will clear up confusion about the statutory authority for exercising eminent domain authority and the next steps that would be taken in the regulatory permitting process. The letters also ask relevant questions attempting to clarify exactly where things stand with regard to the proposed intermodal rail facility.

Congressman Dingell stated, “We are trying to get to the facts about what decisions have been made and those that still need to be determined. The citizens of Erie Township deserve the opportunity to be heard and have their questions and concerns answered regarding development within their community. It is very important that there is an open, honest, and transparent process for all interested parties to participate in.”

Senator Stabenow said: “There are too many unanswered questions about this project right now, and I am committed to working with Erie Township residents to ensure they have input and information every step of the way.”

Senator Levin said: “This proposal could have a significant impact on the local environment as well as the quality of life for residents and business owners who call Erie Township home. Our constituents have invested their lives in this community and it is imperative that they have a clear understanding of how this project might move forward as well as the regulatory process that governs it.”

Michigan State Representative Kathy Angerer added: “Many residents of Erie have deep roots in the township, going back generations. They deserve to know the facts about and be a part of the process regarding regulatory decisions, and not feel like the township is being ‘railroaded’ into anything.”

In addition to letters to the Monroe County IDC and US Rail Corporation, the four government representatives sent letters to the US Surface Transportation Board, the Michigan State Attorney General, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
