Getting to the Bottom of the Gas Price Crunch

By U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO)

These are steps in the right direction.  Only through such actions can we ensure that the prices Coloradoans are paying at the pump are legitimate and not an attempt to exploit this tragedy to increase profits.

In the long run, we must also recognize the combination of limited oil supplies and increased global demand will eventually lead to even higher costs for gas.  The federal government should play a large role in encouraging the development of new energy sources to drive our economy and protect our livelihoods. Until that occurs, however, gasoline companies and distributors should not have license to gouge the American consumer during times of crisis or scarcity.

In the meantime, there are a number of steps Coloradoans can take to reduce their fuel costs. This includes keeping your car properly tuned, inflating your tires to the manufacturer’s recommended levels, follow the speed, and be judicious with your car trips.  Additional tips can be found at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/drive.shtml.  The U.S. Department of Energy also has a website where you can report gas price gouging at http://gaswatch.energy.gov/.

Artificially high gas prices are hurting Colorado’s economy and straining family budgets. Rest assured, I am committed to fighting gas price gouging and will continue to use my position on the Energy and Commerce Committee to stand up for Coloradoans.  I will also continue to work to develop long-term solutions to our energy crisis that reduce our reliance on gas and oil and lead our nation to energy independence.
