Dear Friend,
Our fight to expand embryonic stem cell research grabbed headlines this past week as Karl Rove used a visit to Denver to announce that President Bush would veto my legislation if the Senate passes it next Tuesday. The next day, I received a letter from the White House rejecting my request to discuss stem cell research with the President.
I am outraged that President Bush is considering using his first veto on legislation that holds the key to helping millions of Americans suffering from diseases like Parkinson’s and diabetes. This issue is too important to become part of Karl Rove’s cynical electoral strategy.

In other news, despite delays by the Republican leadership, the House finally passed the Voting Rights Act (VRA) Reauthorization which will extend this important law for another 25 years. In the 41 years since its initial passage, the VRA has enfranchised millions of racial, ethnic and language minorities by eliminating discriminatory practices and removing other barriers to political participation. We did the right thing in 1965 by passing the Voting Rights Act and happily we did the right thing again this past week by reauthorizing it.
