STATEMENT BY CONGRESSMAN WM. LACY CLAY

IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT BUSH’S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Washington, DC -

-         “Tonight, we heard more empty promises from a President who no longer enjoys the trust of the American people.  The culture of corruption that is embedded at the heart of this administration and the Republican leadership distorts the truth, sacrifices the public interest for private profits, and tramples on the constitution.

-         Mr. Bush spoke a great deal about the war on terrorism and keeping America safe.  But he didn’t explain why key recommendations from the 9-11 Commission have still not been implemented.  There is a critical Homeland Security Gap that this President is unwilling or unable to address.

-         The President continues to ignore reality in Iraq.  Three years ago, I warned that the invasion and occupation of Iraq would be a grave mistake.  To date, we have suffered over 18,000 American casualties and have spent $300 billion; and there is still no real plan for victory or an exit strategy to bring our troops home.

-         Mr. Bush’s healthcare initiatives will do absolutely nothing for the 45 million Americans who still are without healthcare coverage.  American businesses and working families are being crushed by healthcare costs.  The only logical answer is a single-payer system that guarantees healthcare for all and takes the burden off the backs of businesses that create jobs.

-         And finally, the President owes our senior citizens an apology and an explanation about his Medicare Prescription drug plan train wreck.  This program is one of the worst pieces of legislation that has ever been enacted.  It is causing confusion, fear and unexpected expense for millions of seniors.  When we elect a new Democratic Majority this fall, we will replace this flawed, phony plan with real prescription drug coverage that protects patients, instead of big drug and insurance companies.”
