Congesswoman Barbara Lee was first elected as Representative from California’s 9th Congressional District in a 1998 special election to fill the seat of retiring Congressman Ronald V. Dellums. In Congress, she is the senior Democratic woman on the International Relations Committee and serves on the Financial Services Committee. She is also the Co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus, Whip for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Assistant Democratic Whip, Chair of the CBC Task Force on Global HIV/AIDS, and Co-Chair of the CBC Haiti Task Force. Congresswoman Lee is a member of a variety of task forces, including the Democratic Health and Medicare Taskforce, the Democratic Safe Neighborhoods Taskforce, the Pro-Choice Caucus, and the Global Climate Change Caucus.
Before coming to Washington, Congresswoman Lee served in the California State Assembly from 1990-1996 and the California State Senate from 1996-1998.
Congresswoman Lee’s primary mission is to improve the lives of the people in the 9th Congressional District and to promote, for Americans and all citizens of the world, international security through peace.
