Delegate Encourages Veterans To Be Vigilant
 About Personal Information

(Washington, DC, June 9, 2006) — Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen encourages all veterans and military members in the Virgin Islands  to be vigilant regarding their personal information in light of the recent breach in security due to the theft of a laptop computer containing the personal identification information of millions of veterans and active duty military and national guard members.

“There are several resources that our veterans and active duty military can use to get the most up-to-date information on this matter,” the Delegate said.  “Those with internet capabilities can log on to www.firstgov.gov as well as www.va.gov/opa. Those without access to the internet,  can call 1-800-FED-INFO or 1-800-333-4636.  The call center will operate from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm (EDT) from Monday through Saturday.”

Christensen said that the Veterans Administration also advises that veterans and active duty military beware of any phone calls, e-mails, and other communications from individuals claiming to be from the VA or other official sources, asking for personal information or verification of it.  This is often referred to as information solicitation or “phishing.” The Veterans Administration emphasized that the VA and other legitimate organizations will not contact you to ask for or to confirm your personal information.  If you receive such communications you should report it to the VA immediately at 1-800-FED-INFO (1-800-333-4636).
