Mon Bijou Project Set to Begin in June

(Washington, DC, May 11, 2004)—Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen announced today that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will soon announce the awarding of a contract to complete the Estate Mon Bijou flood control project.  The Delegate met this morning with the Commander of the Jacksonville District of the Army Corps, Col. Robert M. Carpenter, who informed her that they were about to go forward with the construction of the project.

“I was extremely pleased to hear that the Mon Bijou project is ready to go,” Christensen said.  “Colonel Carpenter stated that they are currently receiving bids for the project which will be opened on May 25th.    The contract is expected to be awarded no later than June 24th.”

The project calls for the construction of a by-pass channel around the developed portions of Estates Mon Bijou and Glynn.  The channel along with two new bridges, which will be built over Highway 73 and Glynn Road, will provide 100-year flood protection to the residential area.  Finalization of the project was contingent upon the Virgin Islands government acquiring certain lands in the area, this was completed in late March.
