Homeland Security Committee To Visit Virgin Islands
(Washington, DC, February 5, 2004)—Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen announced today that the Select Committee on Homeland Security of the U.S. House of Representatives has scheduled a visit to the U.S. Virgin Islands at the end of February.

The committee, of which Christensen is a member, will be visiting the territory as part of a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) that will also tour Miami, Florida and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from Thursday, February 26 through Sunday, February 29.

Under the leadership of Chairman Chris Cox, the group plans to tour and receive briefings on homeland security issues at the Port of Miami, Miami International Airport and the U.S. Southern Command; while in the Virgin Islands they will tour the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HDTA) on all three islands and the HOVENSA Oil Refinery on St. Croix; while in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the CODEL will tour Camp X-Ray and observe Base Security Activities.

Since becoming a Member of the Select Committee last year, Delegate Christensen has pressed for the committee to visit the Virgin Islands in recognition that the territory is a vital part of the U.S. Southern border. “I am pleased that they have decided to come and see for themselves what our security concerns are,” said Christensen. “This trip will focus on our homeland security, border and immigrations issues,” the Congresswoman said.
