(Washington, DC, January 14, 2004)— Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen said today that she was pleased to announced that the Virgin Islands Fire Services will receive another half million dollar grant for fire operations and firefighter safety. “Once again, through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program from the Department of Homeland Security, our firefighters will receive needed funds to purchase the tools and resources to protect the health and safety of the public,” Christensen said. The Virgin Islands Fire Services, St. Thomas-St. John division is slated to receive $544,660 for FY ’03 to be used for training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, and modifications to fire stations and facilities. The Virgin Islands was one of 151 fire departments across the country to be funded in Round 29 of this program. Delegate Christensen congratulated retiring Fire Services Director Ian Williams for once again submitting a competitive application that has yielded needed funding for the territory. Applicants had to demonstrate financial need and articulate the benefits to be derived from grant funds. The grants are intended to supplement the fire department’s current budget. | |||
