(Washington, DC, December 10, 2003) — Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen congratulated the Office of the Governor on receiving a disaster declaration for the Territory. President Bush issued the declaration in response to the governor’s request, making the Territory eligible for disaster assistance for the floods and associated damages that occurred from the heavy rains the islands experienced in mid November.
Delegate Christensen spoke with representatives of FEMA yesterday and advised as she has done in the past, that due to the present fiscal picture of the Virgin Islands, the Delegate would be supporting a request for a waiver on the 75% federal funds to a 25% local fund. The request for the matching waiver has to be placed by the governor and FEMA is presently reviewing the governor’s request for a 90% federal funding to a 10% local match. It is anticipated that the decision on the waiver amount will be announced later on today. | |||
